New Guinea Chronicle Nr 3, in which images of the coastline taken from the air, the arrival and reception of KLM passengers, levelling the grounds for the construction of a new shipyard. Also an expedition to the interior for the construction of an airstrip and dropping of supplies and a flight for connection and scouting, dropping included for a patrol of marines with a Catalina seaplane.

Cabin crew descending the aircraft stairs. The new station building with control tower, KLM bus takes passengers to the KLM hotel 't Rif. Passengers in the lounge. Collective meal in the dining hall. The bar. Passenger in swimming trunks ascends stairs to the beach and together with other gentlemen gets into outriggers ready to sail. 45.45 Uprooted trees on the beach near a coastal village. Bulldozer removes vegetation of the grounds for the construction of a shipyard. Bulldozer pushes topsoil on heaps, which are loaded by dragline onto dump trucks. Dumping of the soil alongside the sea. 46.51 Concrete airstrip built by the Japanese during WW II. One of many water filled bomb craters as a result of allied bombing. A live 500 lbs bomb, a Japanese Betty bomber, destroyed on the ground and overgrown by the jungle. Repairs on that airfield. 47.06 Expedition readies itself to leave a village. Long row of bearers leaving the village, headed by the leader and three Papua policemen with rifles. Laborious crossing of a river via tree trunks fallen into the swift streaming waters. Bearers and escorts climb after each other the steep bank, following the path through the jungle. Rest-break with rice eating leader and bearers. The clouded Kebar Plain, the expedition is looking upon. 49.07 The expedition's leader hoists the Dutch flag to a rugged flag-pole on the grassy plain. Manpower from the villages in the neighbourhood cutting the alang-alang grass, while junior supervisor addresses the heads of the villages. Striped piglet flees away through the grass. The junior supervisor sets fire to the cut grass, smothering files of grass. 50.04 Pre-arranged textile identification marks are being put down at the beginning of the dropping zone. DC-3 of the KLM makes a low pass across the grounds, drops bundles and pulls up again. Spades, blades and shafts for hoes, as well as rakes are being distributed to the waiting Papuans. DC-3 flying over. Framework of the station building under construction, where the Papuans are tying the bamboo rafters to the buttresses with rattan. 51.16 Papuans carry a wild boar killed hunting and tied to a pole inside the fence, and are talking about the hunting prize. Local vegetables and fruit in a warong (= stall). Dancers are coming inside the fence walking in a long row behind each other and are performing a rhythmical round dance. Close-up of the singing and dancing Papuans with decorations on their bowed heads. 52.14 The Dutch flag on the flag-pole on the grass plain surrounded by the offshoots of the mountains. Observer observes the shaggy wooded mountain ridges through field glasses from a blister, in which a machine-gun is mounted. PBY Catalina seaplane of the Naval Aviation Service alights on a lake. Canoes of dugout tree trunks, manned with Papuans approach the machine. 53.18 Double-body canoe with loading-platform on which departing passengers, is being paddled alongside. Papuans in their canoes are looking at the unloading of the freight, which is being paddled ashore on a raft. Take-off of the Catalina and air pictures of the coastal line. 53.42 The cockpit where the second pilot takes over the control of the cocks of the starboard engine from the pilot Air pictures of the mountainous coastal line; crew members throw out a bundle on a chute from the blister. The dropping filmed from the ground, where the thrown out bale with chute is recovered by a patrol of marines. 54.16 The pilot turns the trim-wheel. Air pictures of places on the coast.
