Een indruk van het bush-vliegen tussen de bergen. In het begin is het enigszins angstaanjagend: zo links en rechts die donkere bergmassieven. Men mag alleen maar op grondzicht vliegen. Er zijn enkele piloten omgekomen, die tussen de bergen gingen vliegen, terwijl het dal geheel gevuld was met wolken. Ze zijn gedesori‰nteerd en tegen de bergen gevlogen.

Commentaar maker foto: ook in Nabire heeft de missie een eigen kleine hangar, aan het huis van de piloot aangebouwd. De "station-master" was hier jarenlang de Amerikaanse piloot Tom Benoit, die in de jaren tachtig, vermoedelijk door een hartaanval, met zijn vliegtuig verongelukt is.

Commentaar maker foto: onderhoud van de missievloot van 4 Cessna's 185 was in eigen hand. Op deze foto ziet men Pater Jan van de Pavert aan de administratie in het onderdelenmagazijn. Hij was piloot en had bij Cessna in Amerika een opleiding voor vliegtuigmecano gevolgd. Van de Pavert is inmiddels (2010) overleden.

Commentaar maker foto: het aftanken was iedere keer een ellende, dit moest met een handpompje uit een 200-liter vat gebeuren. Ik heb in 1975 nog net meegemaakt, dat de Pertamina (opvolger van de Shell) benzine ging leveren. Tevoren moest jezelf maar via via uit Biak vaten met benzine bestellen. Dit was een grove oplichterij, want iedere keer moest je de vaten ook betalen, die men niet terug wilde nemen! Ten tijde van dit beeld is het geknoei met een handpompje dus geschiedenis.

Overview of the front of the AMA building at Sentani. A water tank is part of it because the municipality does not provide water. I myself have made a them a well. We had fine water from a large underground stream. Sentani is located at the foot of the Cyclops Mountains which explains the abundance of water.

Constructing a flight service is not easy. Years of preparations and meetings have preceded this. Pilots and maintenance service are of major importance. Here a picture of a few pilot residences at Sentani of the Mission flight service AMA (Associated Mission Aviation).

another shot from the Protestant Mission's workshop. They were able to perform major repairs on aircrafts. The Roman Catholic Mission could not do this so they could sell a broken down plane to the Protestant Mission whom made the aircraft ready to fly and added it to it's own fleet.

Because of harassment by the Indonesian government it is really hard to receive everything in time. Unfortunately the Mission is sometimes tempted to bribe to speed things up. However this hands you over to the devil. In principle, never start bribing!

A beautiful aircraft of the American Linguistic Institute. This institute dedicates itself to capturing unknown languages. Unfortunately a day after I took this picture the plane crashed against a mountain in eastern Papua New Guinea with the complete crew of language specialist on board. All died.
