Filmic tour through Netherlands New Guinea by Catalina amphibian of the Naval Airforce and by HMS Corvette 'Boeroe'. In ten stages several places will be visited, where local Papuas will be welcoming the visitors, entertaining them with manifestations, during which resident Jan van Eechoud presents a prize, and the returned civil servant Dr. V. de Bruyn will be welcomed by 'his' Ekari as their great friend and leader. At the end of the tour a visit will be paid to the Joka boarding school at Hollandia (Jayapura), under the management of Ds. Kijne, where 200 boys are receiving a professional training amongst other things in horticulture and agriculture and technical service. Description (source: beeldengeluid.nl): 00.55 SHOTS: On a Globe the location of the Island of New Guinea is being indicated. On the map of Netherlands New Guinea transparent maps of England, The Netherlands and Germany are being projected and zoomed in on Holland, the one eleventh part of NNG. 01.47 Coasts overgrown with dense jungle up to the waterline. Proceeding Corvette HMS 'Boeroe'. Amphibian Consolidated PBY Catalina of the Naval Air force at anchor, taking off thereupon. Air pictures of coastal plains. 02.39 On the map appears the place Kasim on the Vogelkop (Bird's Head), the goal of the first stage. Crew and passengers are taken ashore by an outrigger, where a couple of village headmen are posing and a little orchestra with drums accompanying men, women and children dancing. 03.41 On the map the second stage leads to Inanwantan, coastal village to the south of the Vogelkop, where dressed ships are being rowed along, a massive welcome dance is being performed and an albino Papua is posing. Boat race of long canoes, regarded by public on the gallery, after which the winner receives a length of cloth from resident Jan van Eechoud, called the Father of the Papua's. 05.53 The third stage on the map leads to Fakfak. Air pictures followed by shots from the water of the place where authorities and population are waiting for the visitors on the jetty. In procession they go to the spot where Franciscan father Bas Vendrig oversees the preparation of a meal, the construction of a house and the tilling of the gardens with a hoe. 07.23 The fourth stage on the map leads right across the Vogelkop to Manokwari, situated on the north coast, where Papuans after an introduction dance give a demonstration of a prowling approach to a raid, finishing in a would-be massive battle. Afterwards a dancing celebration of a peace feast. 09.16 The fifth stage on the map brings to Serui, where a big procession is being held during a mission celebration, which has been prepared for months at great length. Attributes of bamboo and papier-mâché, as well as expression of affection to the House of Orange are being carried along, and all this accompanied by flute orchestras. 10.20 The sixth stage on the map leads to Biak, above which the Catalina does an approach-flight. Air pictures of the aircraft cemeteries with left behind B-24 Liberators. After the Catalina's landing ground pictures of such a charnel house of aircraft wrecks, decorated with pin-up girl. The seventh stage on the map takes them to Ambai, situated 90 km farther on. The company is being taken there by HMS corvette 'Boeroe'. Pile-dwellings in the water at the foot of steep and heavily wooded mountains, filmed from the water. 12.20 The eighth stage on the map leads to Mubuai on the coast, where prau with local beauties travels past, Papua reads a word of welcome and Papua women perform a incantation dance, accompanied by music of drums prepared with cigarettes. 13.15 The ninth stage on the map leads to the Wisselmeren (Paniai Lakes) in the interior with air views of sea and mountains. Catalina alights on the lake. From the aircraft Dr. Victor de Bruyn, named 'Jungle Pimpernel', calls up 'his' people, the Ekari (small people), after which they emerges from their houses, rowing in their canoes of dug out tree-trunks to the Catalina to collect the visitors and to bring them to the blockhouse of the only white person: an American missionary. 15.00 Close-up of Papua smoking a cigarette, holding it sideways. Dr. de Bruyn converses with men and women, after which they make fire in a primitive but effective way. Visitors are sitting in front of the house, surrounded by Papua's, women with their nets over their heads amongst them. Missionary delivers a speech and finishes with a prayer. 16.51 Archery contest by the Ekari and Dr. De Bruyn, who afterwards participates in the traditional round dance. 17.34 Tenth and last stage on the map leads to Hollandia (Jayapura), situated on the north coast against the frontier with Australian New Guinea, with air views of the bay and harbour. In the Joka boarding school on the Sentani Lake near Hollandia, the boarders sing under the direction of Ds. Kijne. Medical attention is given. The gardens are cultivated with hoes. Tubes are threaded. Telephone wiring is being installed. A jeep is being serviced. Knowledge is being put into practice by a Papua driving a bulldozer. 19.58 River banks and mountains with dense jungle, filmed from the water. 20.31 Kaleidoscope of previous images, completed with shots of the coast-line, filmed from amphibian taking off. 21.28 THE END.
