Discussion on the modifications of old myths (as representations of esential events) in changing societies and the possible adaptation of western systems of thinking as replacements or continuations. Examples given are from Timor and from the Mimika in southwest New Guinea

This article deals with relationships between public institutions at state and provincial levels and groups of rural Papua New Guineans, how they developed over the course of the colonial era and later periods. The applicability of the concepts of 'nation' and 'nationalism' is also discussed.
